Spindle Turning: Making a Heirloom Christmas Carousel with Colwin Way August 29-September 2, 2022
This course will take the student through the making of their very own Christmas Carousel or Pyramid. Commonly seen in the eastern area of Germany or the Ore Mountains, these whimsical creations create a real talking point and a feeling of nostalgia when they turn their scene with only candle power. Students will learn a variety of spindle turning techniques and tools, but Colwin will mostly rely heavily on the skew chisel, which will allow students the chance to hone their skills with this very much misunderstood tool. Discussions will take students through a variety of different types of skews including some authentic German toy making skew chisels. On top of making a Christmas carousel, students will be able to create a series of decorations to adorn their heirloom piece, including a nativity scene, Christmas trees and snowmen if they wish. During the week, students will spend their time turning and decorating a 1-3 tiered Christmas Pyramid that will instantly become a family heirloom.
