Metamorphosis: Revitalizing Turnings with Steve Loar August 1-5, 2022
The world is full of wooden objects that were turned on lathes. This class will give students an opportunity to resuscitate some of them; giving them entirely new, artistic, lives. This metamorphosis will use a few simple machines and tools, a variety of strategies and your imagination. The resulting forms may be useful or sculptural, or maybe ceremonial, autobiographical, or narrative. This is not a woodturning course, so no experience with woodturning is needed. Students will explore the possibilities offered by cutting, repetition, addition, subtraction, and reassembling, plus texture and color. Participants will recombine and reconfigure parts and shapes using traditional, novel, and invented joinery methods. Woodworking machines will be demonstrated.
Students will need to bring a quantity of premade turnings; these can be new, used, bought, broken, gifted, or parts; bowls, spindles, and furniture parts. Steve is an enthusiastic and high-energy teacher, so be prepared to push the boundaries of your imagination.
