Creative Embellishments: A Fresh Look at Old Techniques with Tim Coleman July 18-22, 2022
Join internationally known furniture maker Tim Coleman for a week of exploration and experimentation as students learn seven different ways to create visually exciting textures and patterns on furniture and other wood surfaces. Inspired by carving and veneer work from around the globe, Tim has developed a variety of unique twists on old techniques that makers at all levels can incorporate into their work. The emphasis will be on practice and experimentation as new techniques are introduced each day. Students will create many sample boards as a record of the techniques they learn and ideas they test out. Thick veneer is an important part of these techniques, and students will learn how to cut their own veneer from solid wood on the bandsaw. Learning to saw and work with their own veneer opens students to a world of creative options that are not possible with thin veneer. There will also be extensive time at the scroll saw, so expect to come away with enhanced skills on this versatile machine.
Students can look to Tim’s large collection of sample boards and pattern books for inspiration, and there will be a lot of sharing of ideas in the classroom as students are influenced and challenged by one another. Everyone will come away with plenty of ideas for how to embellish tables, cabinets, boxes and more.
