Carve a Northwest Coast Dugout Canoe Bowl with David Franklin September 19-23, 2022
In this class, students will learn about the different traditional dugout canoe styles of the Pacific Northwest. Participants will get to choose one of the different styles of dugout canoes from the Northwest Coast to carve. David will talk about the different styles and cultures they come from, and how they are used and traditionally decorated. Students will make stylized versions of the traditional canoes. By the end of the week students will get a functional bowl and will also learn the ins and outs of the shapes of traditional canoe styles. Students will need to bring whatever hand carving tools, adzes, chisels, or crooked knives they have. David will be demonstrating using adzes, and crooked knives, and students will get a chance to work with these traditional tools.
