Alf Sharp brings another period furniture masterpiece to our shop as his class undertakes "Making a Tilt Top Tea Table". And just to bring something new to the table, this project requires lots of lathe work!
We once again, we had the privilege to host a classroom full of happy parent / child combos as John Knight returned to lead his engaging "Young Mechanics" course this weekend. While they were busy up front, we likewise welcomed Cathryn Peters back to the school to lead "Weaving Seats: Traditional Techniques With Cane".
Another first for our turning program was the introduction of a pen making class (or I should say, a fine writing instruments class), as these little turned wonders went way beyond our expectations. As it turned out, we picked the right man for the job, as Barry Gross delighted his sold out class. Each student left with finished pens worth about $1000 (easy). Don't believe me? Check out the last photo!
It was a grueling week for the dedicated class of woodworkers, but when you sign up for "Sculptural Rocking Chair II", you already know that! Happily, their efforts were amply rewarded as another batch of Maloof style rocking chairs are ready for the finish room. Hats off to everybody who completed this special project.
Students in "From Woodworking to Craftsmanship" came away from their week with a whole new appreciation for the use of hand tools as they created a handy tool tote entirely by hand, using the lessons they learned from Jeff Miller throughout the week. Jeff's acknowledged mastery of fine craftsmanship means he had a lot to teach his class. Throughout the week they reviewed the fundamentals that underlie true craftsmanship as they pushed all of their skills further!
Known for his expertise with hand tools and a wealth of woodworking information, Christopher Schwarz is a regular at MASW. This week he's here to lead "Design & Build a Traditional Trestle Table". And before the week was out, each student created their own interpretation (with lost of guidance from Chris) of this furniture classic.
