Another posting to direct folks to the new video on our home page. This time it’s from the man himself, Marc Adams.
Last season I had the opportunity to film a demonstration Marc did for the class before starting the Joinery section of his 2 week Apprenticeship class.
Marc surprised the class by stating that even a brand new Japanese saw (his preferred type of saw) often needs to be tuned up before it can produce the high quality cuts that are required for precision joinery. In this video, Marc first shows that the new blade he has won’t cut a true line. Next he demonstrates a fast and easy solution to the problem. Finally, since the proof is in the cut, Marc shows us how much better the saw cuts after his “fix”. Even better, Marc’s technique can be applied to those of us who use English saws – you just don’t remove as much tooth set.
As someone who attempted to learn woodworking on his own for several years before finding MASW, I can’t overstate how big an impact demonstrations such as these have had on the quality (not to mention the fun) of my own woodworking. Imagine…tuning up a NEW tool… When I think how much time I lost thinking it was my technique that was the problem, when all along it was my new shiny tool that was causing problems, I shudder to think. Luckily, as a devoted MASW fanboy, I no longer have these types of problems. (Knock on wood)
Hope everybody enjoys the video. Feel free to drop me a line at markwithak@marcadams.com with comments, criticisms, or requests for future video. The school year is just getting started!
Make more sawdust,
Mark
