You asked for it so here it is!! Digital pictures from all of our recent classes and available for you to download to your own computers – for FREE!
Marc heard your requests for access to all the pictures taken by the shop assistants every week and asked me to find a way to make them available to you (without the need for you to try and track me down – apparently, I’m too good at being hard to find).
Anyway, I think you’ll find it’s a very convenient way for our alumni to share their week at MASW with friends, family, and co-workers.
Here are a few quick pointers to help you get started interacting with the service…

Finally, don’t forget to try the other buttons on the page. You can view a slideshow or even share on Facebook or Twitter!

We hope you enjoy this new digital resource from MASW.

And your NOT gonna believe this. I certainly couldn’t…

There are GOLF BALLS HANGING FROM THE CEILING in the front mill room!!! You heard me….GOLF BALLS! (lots of them) They all hang in varying degrees from the ceiling, finally ending up on my “Karen’s Cafe” sign. What’s up with that?? I hear that isn’t the end of it either…there’s more to come.

Never a dull moment so stay tuned…
John Economaki is here with “Thinking Creatively with John Economaki!” There’s a joke in there, but I refuse to give in so you’ll have to use your imagination on this one. LOL! Michael Hosaluk is here teaching “Bending in Woodturning” and Scott Grove is finishing his “Apprenticeship “class that began a week ago. Things went well in the kitchen today, despite my tendency to be a “ditz.” I got off to a rough start but everyone got lunch at the appropriate time. A special “shout out” to Mark Hedin’s family for the beautiful flowers for Paula, Susie and I for Mother’s Day! It was so sweet of them to think of us with a brand new baby in their own household. Also, another special thanks to the two students who left us presents in the kitchen last week. MUCH appreciated!!

Tune in on Friday for my blog. When Marc and John Economaki get together it’s a week of practical joke “one-upmanship.” Never know what those two are gonna do!

Have a blessed week!

Wow!! It’s really hard to believe that it’s friday!! This week went really fast. This week Dale Foss was here with a Veneering class, an Apprenticeship class with Scott Grove. Then, there was this guy here by the name of Marc teaching Basic Woodworking. Man, was THAT guy hard to please…. can’t wait till he goes home…(kidding!)

This year during the lunch hour, Markwitha”k” has a slide-show of the week’s current happenings for all to see on our Flat Screen T.V.’s in the cafe. No more looking at previous year’s pics. This week, I just happen to catch a picture of some guy (that looked suspiciously like Scott Grove!) prancing…yes, I said PRANCING in the back of the school, in the woods, near the gazebo’s. I gotta tell you, that is NOT something I’m gonna be able to forget for a very long time. It’s not something you see everyday. The really weird thing is that he wasn’t content with just one picture,…..like he was caught in the act, It was more that he was “embracing” his prancing-ness. The more confident and secure he got…the more elaborate he became. If this woodworking thing doesn’t work out, he has a future in prancing in any near-by woods!

Never know what your gonna see at Marc Adams!!

Blog to ya later!!

Hi Everybody!!

Okay, okay before everybody gets all in a “tizzy” about me not blogging on Friday when I said I would, I need to tell you that I honestly tried. [I can confirm that! -mwk]

Anyway, for some reason or other I could not log into my account here at the school or at home. I talked with Mark with a “k” all weekend and we couldn’t figure it out, so today we sat down and tried it together. Of course, it worked. I felt like an idiot! However, Mark took pity on me and tried to make me feel better. He said, “You know Karen, every time you try to log into something it goes to 15 million”….okay, he didn’t really say a million but at this point my eyes started to glaze over and my hearing abruptly stopped working because I cannot understand all the technological jargin that comes out of his mouth. However, I was able to concentrate enough to hear the end of his explanation…..”so if one of them decides not to work that day, you can’t get logged in.” Decides not to work that day?? Really? Now don’t mis-understand, I do get that we don’t always want to work. [no really! It's the servers! -mwk] For example, just this morning a student popped her head into the kitchen to tell us that she is allergic to mushrooms. That’s something we need to know and we appreciate her checking in. We went over the menu with her and told her that we are going to make Green Bean Casserole which has Cream of Mushroom soup in it, but we will just make plain green beans for her. Susie then says, “Who knows we just may make plain green beans for everybody that day. Just depends on how motivated we feel on that day.” Soo true!! Our menu is subject to the “whims” of the cooks. It’s just how we roll…anyway…..where was I going with this???? Oh yeah, “not wanting to work.” I really do get it. Sometimes we just don’t “feel” like it. So long story short, I TRIED to log in to blog, but our computer didn’t feel like letting me. It’s as good as an excuse as any, and I’m not afraid to use it!! TeeHee!

Just wanted to say that Ed Dolan got his Fellowship last week!! Whoo!! Congratulations to him. I asked him out of all the classes that he took, which one was his favorite, besides anything that Marc Adams taught (I know which side my “bread is buttered on!”) ? He said the 2-week Apprenticeship class with Michael Fortune. Then I asked him, what’s your favorite thing about MASW and he said the SWEETEST thing!! (No, he didn’t say YOU! HA!) He said that, “MASW makes it easy to be away from home! ” Isn’t that the BEST!! We soooo try to do that. We know you have a choice of woodworking schools and we want you to have the best stay here possible. You all work really hard and we know it’s hard to be away from home for a week and even two-weeks at a time. We want our students to think of this place as your “home away from home.” and we want our “family of friends” to come as often as they can. What a great compliment!

I think that’s it for now!! Blog to you later!

Greetings to all my faithful followers!! We have wonderful news to share at MASW…we have a NEW BABY in the family!

Mark Hedin and his beautiful wife, Carol welcomed Sadie Ann Hedin Sunday evening at 7:30 into this world. Everyone is doing great, including big brother, Jonas who is taking his “Big Brother” duties very seriously. Sadie was 21 inches long and weighed in at 8 + pounds. Much too large for itty-bitty Carol. I am sure Carol is relieved to have this part over with, and I’m sure Mark is glad that us girls are no longer, nagging him about how Carol is doing. Sadie is absolutely beautiful with her chubby cheeks and dark hair.

As a side note, all of us feel blessed to have the Hedin family in our lives. If only our world were filled with such dedicated, hard working, and kind people as these two. It would certainly be a better place to visit….

Check back soon, I’ll bet we will have pictures from the proud pappa.

I am going to do my best to blog on Monday’s and Friday’s just to be consistent. I know, I know…Good luck with that! LOL!

This week we have Paul Schurch teaching “Stone Marquetry,” ” Making Beautiful Outdoor Furniture “with Tim Celeski and finally the “Great and Powerful” Michael Fortune, teaching “Getting the Most From Your Band Saw.”

Should be interesting…check back on Friday and see.

Blog to you later!

Hi Everyone!!! I’m so sorry I have not been able to blog until now. We’ve been really busy getting back into the swing of things here at MASW.

As most of you know, school started April 2 and we have been going “Full Speed” since then. Lot’s of new, and exciting changes here. Namely, we have new floors in the classrooms and here in the cafe too! Standing all day is going to be much more comfortable for everyone now. The only complaint I have about the new floors is that they are hard to get clean. I’ve scrubbed and scrubbed, but I canNOT get these flecks of “stuff” off the floor. It looks like confetti. I’ve complained to Doug and he just looked at me like I’m nuts. What’s up with that? Anyway, I just got disgusted and decided to leave them on the floor. They’re EVERYWHERE and he’ll just have to deal with it. He put it down there anyway. Right after Marc spread this “goop” (it looked a lot like my hair gel , Doug walked around sprinkling the confetti on the floor. He looked pretty silly doing it too! But don’t tell him I said that. He would be embarrassed. Well like I said, he can deal with it. Strange no one else has complained.

This week we have Jeff Headley and Steve Hamilton, Stephen Proctor and Ray Key. A great group of instructor’s and as always, the students are terrific.

That’s it for now I think. I am going to try and blog at least once a week so keep an eye out for that. You NEVER know what’s gonna happen next at the Adam’s place! :)

Hi Folks. Anyone who’s been at the school knows that safety is job 1 each and every week for the shop assistants and instructors, so I hope you’ll forgive the fact that this post is a little on the late side, but as I spent our second week on the shop floor with Zane, Doug, Jeff, and Mark H.
Our second week of the season was a heavy lifting week with Christopher Schwarz leading his sold out class through the process of making an 18th-Century Workbench. And they did start the process at the very beginning – with 18′ beams of doug fir! It’s a pity they didn’t get to see Zane pop that reverse wheelie when he unloaded the pallets with the fork lift!! I could tell you more about the class, but I doubt I could put it better than Chris did, himself. To check out more about the class, check out the posts and video that Chris Schwarz posted to his blog. To check his posts out, just follow the following links:

While Chris and his crew were hard at work on their benches, things were a little (only a little..) more sedate in Michael Fortune’s “Developing the Idea” class. After all, it’s best to make a a minimum of noise when you’re hiding models from Michael in an attempt to keep him from “reconfiguring” it into an upside down, reversed version of your original idea! Kidding aside, it was a fascinating week watching the class advance their design skills while Michael stepped them through the design process he uses to create every one of his award winning creations. Everybody went home with lots of new directions for their furniture.

Tom brought a wealth of information about the details of Greene & Greene style furniture to his “Making a Greene & Greene Dining Chair” class. But Tom’s expertise was not limited just to one specific style, however. He also is a master of the use of jigs and fixtures to efficiently make fine furniture. Everybody in the class, including yours truly, was treated to daily “ahh-haa” moments as the class was stepped through the chair making process. The results of the week (after lots of hard work on the parts of the students) were clear by Saturday, as each student took home a completed chair!

If turning wood to create one-of-a-kind sculpture or if elevating built-in cabinetry to the level of furnituremaking turns you on, then week 3 was all about you! We were pleased to welcome two newcomers to the ranks of MASW’s long list of instructors as we were joined by woodturner, Stephen Hatcher, and cabinetmaker, Nancy Hiller.

Actually, calling Stephen Hatcher a woodturner is kind of like calling a Oneway Lathe a hunk of metal! Stephen takes his turnings to a whole new dimension with his ingenious use of multi-axis, asymmetrical, and multi-piece turning techniques. He doesn’t stop there, however. Once his turning work is complete, Stephen begins the transformation of his turned work into sculpture by including embellishment with carving, inlaying, airbrushing, epoxies, and dyes and special finishes (to name just a few). Anyone who attended our weekly instructor’s presentation night can testify that his work is amazing! Here’s an example from his presentation, just to give you a taste. Need I say more???

Hiller" width="256" height="180" align="left" hspace="5" />Likewise, Nancy Hiller engaged her students by not only showing them how to create cabinetry that goes above and beyond what most people would call “kitchen cabinets”. She also taught her system of making cabinets, which can be applied to any cabinetry job, to make the process both efficient and profitable. Her system scales easily so it can also be applied to built in bookcases, cupboards, and display cabinetry as well. Nancy also is well versed in the various historic styles and discussed how attention to period details can contribute to the overall result by making the new cabinetry “fit” the look and feel of the room it’s placed in. After seeing her work, it was difficult to decide whether to introduce her as a cabinetmaker or a furniture maker at Wednesday’s Presentation night.

All in all, it was another great couple of weeks at Marc Adams School of Woodworking. Thanks to the instructors for giving their all to help further the craft of woodworking. And thanks to all the alumni – we couldn’t do it without you!

Talk with you all soon,

Those of you on our MASW Newsletter recently had an opportunity to enter a ”Guess How Many Screws Our New Floors Needed” contest for the chance to win a MASW t-shirt of your choice. Today, we’re ready to announce the winner (winners, actually)!

The correct answer the question “How many screws did Zane and Doug drive this last winter when they installed our new bench room floors?” was 7,263!

The closest answer was 7000 screws and was submitted by George Rodgers. Congratualations George, you’re our winner. Geoge will be selecting from our popular t-shirt collection, including: “Layout is Everything”, “MASW University”, or one of our embroidered MASW logo t-shirts. Wear it with pride, George!

We also had a runner-up prize awarded amongst the pool of answers that correctly pointed out that the floor was described as a one that floats on the high density foam panels. That’s true (the screws are driven into spacer strips between the foam panels to lock the 250+ panels in place relative to one other) so one winner was chosen from amongst the entries that claimed that 0 screws were used to secure the floor. You guys got an additional chance of winning for making me laugh! And the winner of the runner-up prize (another t-shirt) is Kenny Long. So congrats to Kenny.

For those of you who haven’t yet joined our mailing list, you may want to consider adding your name as it’s the first place we generally release MASW news as well as special offers that are only made to newsletter subscribers.

That’s it for now. Keep on making sawdust!

As I write this, the first 3 classes of 2012 are winding down from a very exciting start to our new school season.

It was a busy week with all hands on deck with Zane, Doug, Jeff, and Hedin (Mark) acting as shop assistants. Marc Adams once again started our season with the famous (or is that infamous) Joinery class. Marc was joined by fellow instructors Alan Lacer and Matthew Hill teaching “Woodturning with Alan Lacer” and Michael Ashford with “Hand Hammered Copper Lantern With Michael Ashford”. It’s always nice to start the season with an all veteran crew and the week definitely was a smooth one.

It was fun watching the students progress through the week as they gained new experiences and new skills while gaining plenty of confidence along the way. Marc had his students moving at a fast clip as they progressed from sharpening to dovetails to mortise and tennons and beyond. It never fails to amuse the class that Marc’s definition of a “5 Minute Warning” (before the next demo) has actually been clocked at something around 2 min. 15 seconds (Tops!). In fact, the “5 Minute Warning” is losing about 10 seconds a year which means that in 15 years our students will need to be listening to the demo 10 seconds before they’ve stopped working at the bench!

Alan’s class was busy progressing through multiple tool handles and their first series of turned bowls. When I left on Wednesday, Zane was busy roughing out some truly giant enormous bowl blanks! And with Alan in the house you know that his students got to meet his favorite tool, the Skew!

Finally, Michael Ashford’s Copper Lantern class gained the distinction of once again being the loudest class (hearing protection mandatory!) class we offer. Not exactly something you would expect a woodworking school. But there’s no doubt that the hammering of an entire class at their anvils set new records. While it might have dissuaded folks from other classes from popping in, it certainly didn’t affect the enthusiasm of the participants as their lanterns quickly took shape. Given how few people are producing authentic Arts and Crafts style lighting, the students went home not only with a treasure but with the knowledge to continue an important tradition.

The final thing that everybody talking this week were the new upgrades to our shop facilities. The new floor in all the bench rooms as been confirmed as a really important improvement. To quote Alan Lacer, “on concrete my legs would be feeling it by Tuesday but here it is Wednesday and my legs and back are great!” Everybody else noticed it too. They also found new chairs in all the bench rooms with 3 inches of padding on the seats! That means it doesn’t matter whether you’re standing or sitting you’re going to be all whole lot more comfortable while taking classes here.

It’s not just our facilities that are improving, however. At Tuesday night Instructor Presentations Marc announced that we will be expanding our video coverage of the craft of woodworking as he has agreed to sponsor the woodworking podcast that yours truly produces – the iWoodWork Podcast. We’ll be making more videos (including interviews with MASW instructors) and more available to download to your computer’s starting later this month. To learn more about this podcast (or what the heck a podcast is) stay tuned to the blog for more details next week.

Well, folks, I think that wraps things up for this week. Check back next week for more excitement from the school!
