One of the greatest pleasures in woodworking is the pleasure derived from using hand tools to surface, adjust and fine tune joints to a perfect fit in a piece of furniture. This class will focus on the proper set up of chisels, knives and hand planes for the best performance possible. Students will explore the simple factors involved in sharpening, and the various angles used, which is the foundation of getting the most work and pleasure from your hand tools. Although it takes a little work at the beginning to prepare your tools, it is much less work once you have done so and one needs only to hone occasionally to maintain their proper condition. John will also cover the important details of setting up block planes and the Bailey style of bench planes. Bring your chisels, hand planes and sharpening stones, and we will get them tuned and ready to work. The information presented is applicable to all edge tools irrespective of their age or place of manufacture. Proper sharpening and set up of your hand tools will enable you to improve the quality of your work beyond your expectations and make your woodworking experience more enjoyable as well.
