Scandinavian Style Figure Carving with Harley Refsal
Dates: 8/9 - 8/10
Tool List: Click here for tool list
Harley will start the weekend off with a brief opening description of the historical and cultural background of the so-called 'flat plane' style of figure carving in Scandinavia, instruction will focus on safe and effective carving techniques. Using only a fixed-blade carving (whittling) knife, students will begin to carve a figure of their choice---simple, to more challenging, based on prior figure carving experience. Students will proceed at a pace with which they feel comfortable (some may complete one figure during the course, others may complete a second figure as well). Harley will continue to circulate throughout the class during the entire course, offering encouragement and, if needed, suggestions. He will also demo and discuss items including knife sharpening and stropping; choice of wood for figure carving; design sources and considerations; sawing out your own cut outs and finishing techniques.
