Chip carving is a decorative technique used to make individual projects or to add embellishment to furniture endeavors. In a low-key and quiet atmosphere, Herman will introduce students to the fundamentals of chip carving, including the importance of design, layout, patience, control, and discipline. Students will work at their own pace. The weekend will start with a discussion of how and where chip carving may be used in woodworking. Materials, tools, designs, and helpful hints will be discussed before "digging" in. Hands-on work will begin with sharpening techniques, design layout, and hand/body positions. Participants will practice the 2-chip, 3-chip (triangular) and 4-chip technique while cutting a variety of repetitive design and border patterns. They will experience 2-chip (straight line and curved line) cuts while finishing off borders or creating grids. During the second day of class, you will concentrate on techniques required to cut rosettes, more complicated geometric shapes, and letters. Students will complete the weekend with free form chip carving. By the end of the weekend, Herman will have everyone on the way to free form chip carving.
