Dates: 9/27 - 10/3

The American Arts & Crafts era focused on hand built objects where construction techniques were fully in view. Hand hammered texture with riveted joints and overlays were the order of the day. From the furniture of Stickley and Limbert, the architecture of Green and Green to the metal work of Dirk van Erp and the Roycrofters, the early years of the Twentieth Century were an exciting time for decorative arts in this country. This class will continue that tradition and take you through all the steps in creating your own hammered copper and mica table lamp. This table lamp has design elements taken from both Dirk van Erp and the Roycrofters. Van Erp started coppersmithing in the 1880's and opened his studio in 1908. He proceeded to create some of the most iconic metal work of the Arts & Crafts period. The Roycrofters, of East Aurora, NY, led by master coppersmith, Victor Toothaker built all the lighting for the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC, as well as thousands of lamps, bookends, picture frames, candlesticks, and other decorative objects, which they sold at their Roycroft Inn in East Aurora.
The lamp that you make will employ many smithing techniques used by van Erp and the Roycrofters: decorative overlays, hand riveting, domed lamp shade lid and antique amber mineral mica. Michael will teach students how to move metal, cut and shape lamp components, hand texture the copper, assemble and rivet, solder copper, bend, form and antique the mica, color the copper and finally electrify your lantern.
