Masters Fellowship Turning

The interplay of contrasting materials and textures can produce striking results that are not readily achievable when working in only one medium. By combining wood, natural stone, concrete, and epoxy a whole new world of possibilities opens up. Whether you are creating countertops, fine furniture components, or sculptural forms there are structural as well as aesthetic considerations to contend with. The joinery of dissimilar materials poses unique challenges that we as woodworkers are well equipped to face. Understanding the characteristics and limitations of the different materials is paramount to successfully combining mediums. This class will explore the individual qualities of each material as well as the potential textures that can be utilized to create beautiful and unique multimedia installations. There will be demos on concrete casting, reinforcement, inclusions, dyeing, and polishing as well as techniques for texturing. Epoxy is most commonly known by woodworkers as an adhesive, but that does not begin to sum up its potential as a structural or decorative component in multimedia work. The use of epoxy as a surface treatment and as structural reinforcement will also be demonstrated. The beauty of natural field stone and milled stone lends itself perfectly to multimedia work. Demos on joining and scribing other materials to fit the compound contours of natural stone will teach students to incorporate this medium into their work in seamless manner. Students are encouraged to bring ideas and/or materials for projects from home or just come learn the techniques to successfully marry different materials into a coherent whole. Examples of where to find inspiration in nature and the man made environment will be discussed.

Key Points:
