Masters Fellowship Turning

Making lidded containers on the lathe is one of the most satisfying projects in woodturning. A small lidded container is both functional and decorative and even a little magical. Matthew will work with students primarily one-on-one to help them develop confidence in their woodturning skills as well as their observational skills, i.e., what makes a good form. Good form can be transformed by the addition of color and texture. Students will be encouraged to experiment with a variety of techniques and materials for adding surface enhancement. Some of these include applying dye stains, lacquer and shellac with a spray gun, using milk paint and creating unique surface textures and patterns through wood burning. This is a project class as well as a technique class where the goal is to successfully completing a project that will lead each student to want to continue to develop their skills. Each student will leave the class with several completed boxes, more confidence and hopefully a head full of ideas.

Key Points:

  • Develop sensitivity to sharpness in cutting tools and scrapers
  • Turn concave and convex forms with the detail gouge
  • Use the skew chisel to refine detail and repair torn grain
  • Achieve proficiency with an end grain cutting tool
  • Master shear scraping with the round nose scraper
  • Experiment with adding color and texture to your work

There is a $45 annual registration fee that will be added to your the total amount of the class if this is the first class you are registering for this season.
