Turning Bowls & Platters With Alan Stirt
Dates: 4/10/2017 - 4/14/2017
The focus of this workshop will be turning open bowls and platters. The course will consist of a demonstration/discussion in the morning (two hours) followed by hands-on work with guidance from Alan. The emphasis will be on developing both tool skills and design skills. Alan will cover such topics as harvesting and cutting wood for turning; dealing with green and dry wood; making the grain and shape of a bowl work together; techniques for carving, texturing and coloring; using turning tools (with an emphasis on the bowl gouge); tool sharpening; and sanding techniques. Students will try to integrate all of the above skills with the design process. Each morning Alan will give a lecture/demonstration on some aspect of turning. The class will then have the rest of the day to try out the demonstrated techniques or to work on other areas of woodturning. Because each student will want to focus on individual projects, there will be lots of time for one-to-one feedback on techniques and design. Each student will be encouraged to work at his or her own pace and to concentrate on the skills he or she feels are most important.

There is a $45 annual registration fee that will be added to your the total amount of the class if this is the first class you are registering for this season.
