Classes at Marc Adams School of Woodworking

Making a Shenandoah Valley Tall Case Grandfather Clock with Jeff Headley & Steve Hamilton

Dates: 4/18 - 4/23

Cost: $930
Deposit: $400

Masters Fellowship

This six day class will be an in-depth study of the construction techniques used to build a tall case clock, commonly called a grandfather clock. These clocks were owned by the gentry of the day as a sign of success. The clock Jeff and Steve have chosen is one of many made in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia with English and Germanic influences carried down the valley from Pennsylvania. These clocks were made during the Federal period but with Chippendale features. Students will construct a case that includes the waist, the base, and the hood. Height can be adjusted to fit an eight foot ceiling. This is an extremely intensive project and not all aspects of the construction process can be covered, but it will be Jeff’s and Steve’s goal to send you off with a firm understanding of what is needed to complete this project at home. You will receive a rough cut list and will be required to bring wood that is pre-milled. Instruction will also include how to purchase movements as well as how to install them. During the week students will combine the use of both hand tools and power tools while investigating the period construction methods used in building what was in its time one of man’s most cherished and admired possessions.

Key Points:

  • Build a family heirloom
  • Learn hand-cut dovetails along with mortise and tenon case construction
  • Cut quarter columns and ogee feet
  • Unusual period case construction
  • Develop traditional hand skills
  • Learn how to incorporate contemporary machine skills

NOTE - A cut list will be sent to registrants with a cut list. You will need to Bring Your Own Wood for this project.
