How do you get better as a woodworker? Simply searching around for the "best method" is just chasing around in circles. It doesn't address what's really keeping you from improving. In fact, it can be a serious distraction from addressing what's really important. What's the secret? The best way to improve is to concentrate on the fundamentals. These include, among other things, the proper use of your body for both hand tool and machine use; an in depth understanding of your tools, how to sharpen them and how they work; and a working knowledge of wood as a material, how it behaves, and how to cope with its properties. Learning the fundamentals lays the foundation for easier and more efficient learning of all other woodworking skills, since the basic skills apply in almost all situations.
Join Jeff Miller, author of The Foundations of Better Woodworking, to work on getting more out of your body, your tools, and your whole approach to woodworking. Through a series of exercises and small projects we'll explore body alignment, power and control, learn about how feedback can rapidly accelerate your learning, how best to practice, and why making mistakes is so important (and how to recover from them). Students will also explore how to sharpen and set up your tools so you can start using them to accomplish exactly what you want to do. And Jeff will cover the importance of layout and marking, and how this can dramatically improve your accuracy.
