Masters Fellowship

Hand tool skills are a vital part of a woodworkers repertoire. Even in a modern shop with all of the labor-saving equipment, hand tool proficiency is indispensible. A skilled craftsman can often do a job more quickly with hand tools than with power tools because there is less setup and more flexibility. Too many times hand tools are overlooked because the user doesn't know how to use them efficiently. This workshop provides an excellent opportunity for woodworkers to develop greater hand tool skills. Chris will focus on the use of traditional tools: hand planes, chisels, backsaws, scrapers, molding planes and others. Students will learn how to use, tune and care for these essential tools while learning the other benefits of hand tool use: enjoyment, less dust and noise, and, in certain applications a great work out.

Each student will build a small tool chest. The construction will require the application of many fundamental techniques, including design and layout, four-squaring of stock, through dovetails, mortise and tenon joinery, frame and panel construction, and shaping of moldings. All of these techniques will be executed by hand. Just think of it as "woodworking unplugged." By the end of the week students will have a greater understanding of traditional woodworking techniques. They will also have a great appreciation for hand tools and a beautiful tool chest to carry them in.
