Don't be afraid of the word DESIGN. It's only the single most important aspect of anything you make. It affects functional specifics, dimensions, material choices, finishing, and even craftsmanship. We often launch into the development stages of a project without spending enough time in the open design stage. Design is the first step in the recipe for a good piece before any of these other ingredients are considered. This workshop will introduce the principal points in a design process that you can later tailor to your own liking. Graham will start the week with idea development and move through various design techniques to the point where you would begin your working drawings and models. This will be an intense focus on the process of design. Some feel design is intuitive; others say it is problem solving. I believe there is a fair share of both in any effective design process. Let's have some fun immersing ourselves in design.
*Design 101 basic design terms and principals
*Ideation (Strain your brain. I don't like the word brainstorming.)
*A design process you can tailor to suit yourself
*Noodling (the thing that comes before sketching)
*Conceptual vs developmental sketching, vise versa, and how and why we use both
*Feedback is important
*Back to the sketchbook
*Creating a journal for design ideas, details, color and texture
*Developing scale or proportional sketches
*The importance of scale and full-scale drawings, models and mockups
