Dates: 7/14 - 7/18
Tool List: Click here for tool list
This class will provide you with the opportunity to make a creative moving object from wood. This category of woodwork is called automata in Europe, but you might describe them as executives' toys. The result of your participation in this class will be a unique piece of automata that expresses your inner child. Starting with discussions about mechanisms, John used his 31 years of experience teaching college students to walk you through the design and prototype stages. Critical problem solving and troubleshooting will be covered, ensuring that your final piece performs as you anticipated. Starting with printed patterns, participants will work with basic shop power tools, including table saw, band saw, scroll saw, disc/belt/spindle sanders and drill press to produce a rough prototype or poplar and aircraft plywood. Each participant will then proceed to make a finished working model out of cherry and maple. Through the design and creation of your machine, you will realize the ability to communicate your unique vision through an inspired piece of woodwork designed to intrigue your friends and build confidence in your creative ability.
