Dates: 4/7 - 4/11
Tool List: Click here for tool list
This class will focus on creating several traditional chair leg styles with hand tools. Students will make a pad foot cabriole leg, a stop fluted square Chippendale leg, and a ball and claw carved leg. A reeded turned leg and Spanish foot leg will be demonstrated as well. Efficient hand work and tool use will be emphasized and variations of the forms will be discussed to familiarize students with regional differences. There will be discussions on sharpening, wood selection and custom modifications of tools along with many demonstrations of specific techniques. Emphasis will be placed on creating a spontaneous and fluid carving style with economy of cutting technique. Alan will help students to see how to break seemingly complex carvings down into their basic elements.
